Curtain measurements are more than the width and height of the glass. The position of the track, the amount of curtain overlap, the way fabric gathers and the desired distance from the floor all influence the finished look. You can prepare useful measurements yourself, but the final dimensions should be confirmed for the selected track and heading system.
Start with the proposed track position

Decide whether a wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted track is appropriate before measuring the final drop. The fixing surface must be suitable for the proposed hardware and fabric weight. Note any architraves, cornices, air-conditioning units, doors or obstructions above the opening. Measuring only from the glass can give a misleading result if the finished curtain needs to extend above or beyond it.
Width, fullness and where fabric stacks
The curtain track often extends beyond the window so the opened fabric can stack to the side. The required extension changes with fabric thickness, heading type, window width and the room’s wall space. Fullness affects how much fabric is used relative to the track length. A ripplefold heading and a pleated heading may use different calculations, so use the supplier’s specification rather than a universal multiplier.
Finished drop and practical clearance
Some homeowners prefer curtains that finish just above the floor; others like a softer, longer drop. Think about skirting boards, thresholds, carpet pile and how frequently the fabric will be moved. For a sliding door, a curtain dragging across the walking route may be inconvenient. Check the floor at more than one point if it is not perfectly level.
Checklist before choosing curtains
- Draw the window opening and note obstructions around the proposed track.
- Record where the track should start and finish, not only the glass width.
- Decide how the fabric should sit relative to the floor.
- Confirm fabric heading, fullness and bracket requirements with the supplier.
Common questions
Can curtains be measured before flooring is installed? Preliminary sizes can be planned, but the final drop should be checked against the finished floor height.
Should curtains extend beyond the window? Often, to reduce side gaps and allow better stacking, but the appropriate extension depends on wall space and the curtain system.
